The finale of Glee on Tuesday lured nearly 11 million viewers and finished the year as the highest-rated season-ender for all freshman series, according to preliminary ratings. The drama posted a 4.6 rating/12 share in adults 18-49 ? up 18 percent from last week – and was up 21% in total viewers. Fox says the finale also represented the show’s highest-rated telecast without a lead-in from American Idol.

Glee won its hour among adults 18-49, adults 18-34, teens and all female demographics. Glee was also up 59% in total viewers versus what it averaged in the fall when it aired on Wednesdays (11.6 million versus 7.3 million).

ABC ? which had the NBA Finals ? won the night in viewers (10.52 million), followed by CBS (9.18 million), Fox (8.93 million) and NBC (8.84 million).

Oh my heck! That episode was amazing! Loved it! The music was awesome. I actually got chills during some of the numbers. The Finn & Rachel moments were fabulous. And I loved the messages shared in the episode!

Clearly, Glee’s millions of fans applaud show creator Ryan Murphy’s agenda to promote acceptance of everyone, regardless of race, creed or sexual orientation. But for the Fox hit’s more conservative fans, Murphy has something special in the works.

“I’m adding a Christian character,” he says. “We’ve taken a couple jabs at the right wing this year, so what I want to do with this character is have someone who Christian kids and parents can recognize and say, ‘Oh, look?I’m represented there, too!’ If we’re trying to form a world of inclusiveness, we’ve got to include that point of view as well.”

Murphy says this character (yet to be cast) will speak her mind and be listened to and respected ? though likely not by Kurt, whose homosexuality she won’t accept. This perky New Directions addition, coming next season, will also object to some of the club’s sexually suggestive music selections. Good thing they got Madonna and Gaga in early!

Two characters we won’t see yet: Rachel’s dads. “I like feeling their parenting influence without meeting them,” says Murphy. “At least for another season.”

The Television Critics Association announced the nominees for their awards yesterday. Gee has been nominated in three catagories and Jane Lynch for her portrayal of Sue Sylvester in another.
